Hillsdale IL ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Hillsdale IL hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job functions of an ultrasound technician can include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Hillsdale IL ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to complete. Another alternative for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many colleges set up through Hillsdale IL clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Illinois or whichever state you elect to work in.

Sonographer Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Hillsdale ILAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Hillsdale IL hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the remainder of the training and classes can be attended online in your Hillsdale home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are many times less expensive than on campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be lessened as well. But similarly as with every sonography program you are considering, verify that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Hillsdale IL ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Hillsdale IL area. Obviously location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are other factors that you must also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound technician colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Hillsdale IL employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the sonogram technician schools you are evaluating have partnerships with Hillsdale IL hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Hillsdale healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Find out if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Illinois healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Hillsdale IL home. Those who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  college you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Hillsdale IL area, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
