Ultrasound Tech Occupation Summary

Johnston City IL ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Johnston City IL hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work tasks of an ultrasound technician may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Johnston City IL ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges organize with Johnston City IL hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Illinois or whichever state you choose to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Schools

student attending online sonography class in Johnston City ILAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Practical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Johnston City IL outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the balance of the classes and training may be attended online in your Johnston City home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online schools are many times less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But just as with any sonographer college you are considering, confirm that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Johnston City IL ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Johnston City IL area. Naturally location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Johnston City IL health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram technician colleges you are evaluating have relationships with Johnston City IL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional connections in the Johnston City health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Illinois healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Johnston City IL home. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  program you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Johnston City IL area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.

    Johnston City, Illinois

Johnston City is a city in Williamson County, south central Illinois, United States. The population was 3,543 at the 2010 census. This was a center of coal mining in the early 20th century, having a peak of population in 1920. The mining jobs attracted many immigrants from Europe.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a number of immigrant miners from Italy, Wales and other areas arrived to work in the coal mines. There were tensions among the different ethnic groups, especially when miners went out on strike for better wages and conditions. On June 10, 1915, the city was the site of the lynching of Joe Strando, an Italian immigrant miner from Sicily, by a mob of 300 American men. He was taken from the jail where he was held as a suspect in the murder of Edward Chapman, a wealthy local citizen, and wounding of his daughter.[3] Sicilians were outraged and gathered reinforcements; Americans were arrayed against them. The governor sent in three companies of militia to suppress violence.[3]

Six years later, immigrant Settino de Santis confessed to the murder of Chapman, saying that the man was accidentally shot while visiting at the home of mine foreman Ben Schull. De Santis and two other men shot at Schull in retaliation for having been fired. De Santis confessed before he was executed in another capital case.[4]
