Ultrasound Tech Work Description

Jonesboro IL ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Jonesboro IL hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job tasks of an ultrasound technician can involve:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Jonesboro IL ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete. Another option for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer programs do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor through Jonesboro IL hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Illinois or whatever state you decide to work in.

Sonographer Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Jonesboro ILAs previously mentioned, nearly all ultrasound technician colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off campus facility. Practical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Jonesboro IL outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the balance of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Jonesboro home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are often more affordable than on-campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But similarly as with any sonography school you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the right option for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Jonesboro IL ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Jonesboro IL area. Of course location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed review of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Jonesboro IL employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the ultrasound technician schools you are interested in have associations with Jonesboro IL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist graduates and students form professional connections in the Jonesboro medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Illinois healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Jonesboro IL residence. Students who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  school you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Jonesboro IL area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
