Ultrasound Tech Work Description

Lake Villa IL ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Lake Villa IL hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily job tasks of a sonogram tech can include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Lake Villa IL ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finish. Another option for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that most sonographer schools do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges set up through Lake Villa IL clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Illinois or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Online Sonographer Classes

student attending online sonography class in Lake Villa ILAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Lake Villa IL hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the balance of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Lake Villa home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online programs are often less expensive than traditional options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be decreased also. But just as with every sonography college you are looking at, check that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Lake Villa IL ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Lake Villa IL area. Naturally location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional things that you should also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Lake Villa IL health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram tech programs you are assessing have relationships with Lake Villa IL hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Lake Villa healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Illinois healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they pick will have to be within travelling distance of their Lake Villa IL home. Students who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  program you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Lake Villa IL area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
