Sonogram Tech Occupation Summary

Silvis IL ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Silvis IL clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job functions of an ultrasound tech may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Silvis IL ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that most sonographer programs do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many colleges organize with Silvis IL clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Illinois or whatever state you elect to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Silvis ILAs previously mentioned, virtually all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an approved off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Silvis IL hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the rest of the training and classes can be attended online in your Silvis home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently less costly than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be decreased also. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech college you are considering, verify that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

Questions to ask Silvis IL ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Silvis IL area. Naturally location will be important if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional things that you must also take into consideration, such as if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Silvis IL health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the ultrasound technician programs you are reviewing have associations with Silvis IL hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Silvis medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Find out if the sonographer schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Illinois healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Silvis IL home. Students who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Silvis IL area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
