Sonographer Occupation Description

Wayne City IL ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Wayne City IL clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work tasks of an ultrasound tech can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for further testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Wayne City IL ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many schools set up through Wayne City IL clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Illinois or whichever state you elect to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Wayne City ILAs aforementioned, virtually all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Wayne City IL outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the remainder of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Wayne City home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online programs are often less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech program you are looking at, verify that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Wayne City IL ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Wayne City IL area. Certainly location will be significant if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? Most sonogram tech schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Wayne City IL employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram technician colleges you are evaluating have relationships with Wayne City IL hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Wayne City health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Illinois healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Wayne City IL residence. Those who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Wayne City IL area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
