Ultrasound Tech Work Description

Winthrop Harbor IL ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Winthrop Harbor IL clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work functions of an ultrasound technician may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Winthrop Harbor IL ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that most sonographer programs do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many schools organize with Winthrop Harbor IL clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Illinois or whatever state you decide to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Classes

student attending online sonography class in Winthrop Harbor ILAs aforementioned, virtually all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus facility. Practical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Winthrop Harbor IL hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the remainder of the classes and training can be attended online in your Winthrop Harbor home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are often less expensive than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be decreased as well. But similarly as with any sonography college you are considering, verify that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Winthrop Harbor IL ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Winthrop Harbor IL area. Certainly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are other variables that you should also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Winthrop Harbor IL employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the ultrasound technician schools you are assessing have partnerships with Winthrop Harbor IL hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist graduates and students develop professional connections in the Winthrop Harbor health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Illinois healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Winthrop Harbor IL residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Winthrop Harbor IL area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
