Sonogram Tech Work Summary

Wonder Lake IL ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Wonder Lake IL hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job tasks of a sonogram technician may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Wonder Lake IL ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous schools sponsor through Wonder Lake IL clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Illinois or whichever state you decide to work in.

Sonographer Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Wonder Lake ILAs aforementioned, virtually all sonogram technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus facility. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Wonder Lake IL outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the rest of the classes and training may be attended online in your Wonder Lake home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times more affordable than traditional options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But similarly as with every sonography college you are reviewing, verify that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Wonder Lake IL ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Wonder Lake IL area. Clearly location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other factors that you should also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive review of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Wonder Lake IL health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound technician programs you are reviewing have relationships with Wonder Lake IL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Wonder Lake healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Illinois healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they choose will need to be within driving distance of their Wonder Lake IL home. Students who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  college you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Wonder Lake IL area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
