An Associate Degree will usually take around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Indiana or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Schools

student attending online sonography class in Crothersville INAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Practical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Crothersville IN outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Crothersville home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are often less expensive than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But similarly as with every sonography program you are considering, verify that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Crothersville IN ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Crothersville IN area. Obviously location will be significant if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are other variables that you must also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are several questions that you need ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive examination of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Crothersville IN health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram tech schools you are evaluating have partnerships with Crothersville IN clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to get practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Crothersville health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Indiana healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they pick will need to be within commuting distance of their Crothersville IN home. Those who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Crothersville IN area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
