Sonogram Tech Occupation Description

Haubstadt IN ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Haubstadt IN clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work tasks of a sonogram technician can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Haubstadt IN ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete. Another option for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor through Haubstadt IN clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Indiana or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Haubstadt INAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus facility. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Haubstadt IN hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the balance of the training and classes can be attended online in your Haubstadt home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently more affordable than traditional alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be lessened also. But just as with any sonography program you are reviewing, check that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the right option for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Haubstadt IN ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Haubstadt IN area. Of course location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are additional things that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech schools have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous review of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Haubstadt IN health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram technician colleges you are evaluating have associations with Haubstadt IN clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Haubstadt health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Indiana healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Haubstadt IN home. Students who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  college you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Haubstadt IN area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
