They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Henryville IN clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job functions of a sonogram tech can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable

  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Henryville IN ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that most sonographer colleges do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous schools organize through Henryville IN clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Indiana or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Sonographer Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Henryville INAs previously mentioned, virtually all ultrasound tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off campus facility. Clinical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Henryville IN outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the remainder of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Henryville home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online programs are many times more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be lessened also. But just as with any sonographer school you are considering, make sure that the online program you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Henryville IN ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Henryville IN area. Obviously location will be important if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional variables that you should also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound tech schools have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Henryville IN employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have partnerships with Henryville IN clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Henryville medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Indiana healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will have to be within travelling distance of their Henryville IN home. Students who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Henryville IN area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.

Henryville is home to Indiana's oldest state forest, Clark State Forest, and birthplace of entrepreneur Colonel Harland Sanders, whose iconic image appears in the Kentucky Fried Chicken logo[4] and award-winning bluegrass fiddle player Michael Cleveland.[5]

In 1850, the village of Morristown was established. It was renamed Henryville in 1853 to honor Colonel Henry Ferguson, who was once a colonel in the Pennsylvania militia. He purchased the land on which Henryville was established, and helped persuade Pennsylvania Railroad officials to run the line through Clark County.[6] The Henryville post office was established in 1865.[7]

At approximately 3:15 p.m. (EST) on March 2, 2012, an EF4 tornado caused extensive damage to Henryville, killing one person.[4] It was on the ground for more than 50 miles.[9] The storm destroyed Henryville Elementary School and Henryville Jr/Sr High School.[10][11][12]
