Ultrasound Tech Occupation Summary

Edgerton KS ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Edgerton KS hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work tasks of a sonogram technician can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Available

Edgerton KS ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish. Another alternative for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many colleges organize through Edgerton KS hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Kansas or whichever state you elect to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Edgerton KSAs previously mentioned, virtually all ultrasound technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Edgerton KS outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the remainder of the classes and training may be attended online in your Edgerton home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online colleges are often less expensive than on campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be reduced also. But just as with any ultrasound tech school you are considering, check that the online program you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Edgerton KS ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Edgerton KS area. Naturally location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other variables that you should also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed examination of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Edgerton KS health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the ultrasound tech colleges you are reviewing have associations with Edgerton KS clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Edgerton health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Kansas healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Edgerton KS residence. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Edgerton KS area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
