Ultrasound Technician Occupation Summary

Ellinwood KS ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Ellinwood KS clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work functions of a sonogram technician can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Ellinwood KS ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finish. Another option for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many schools set up with Ellinwood KS clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Kansas or whatever state you elect to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Schools

So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Ellinwood KS hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the balance of the training and classes may be attended online in your Ellinwood home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online schools are many times less costly than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be decreased as well. But similarly as with any sonographer program you are looking at, check that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal choice for you.

Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous examination of their teachers and course materials. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they pick will need to be within driving distance of their Ellinwood KS residence. Students who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. Ellinwood, Kansas

For millennia, the land now known as Kansas was inhabited by Native Americans. In 1803, most of modern Kansas was secured by the United States as part of the Louisiana Purchase. In 1854, the Kansas Territory was organized, then in 1861 Kansas became the 34th U.S. state. In 1867, Barton County was founded.

The first claim at Ellinwood was staked in 1871[7] when it was certain the Santa Fe railroad would be completed nearby. The railroad was finished in 1872 and the city was named after Colonel John R. Ellinwood, a civil engineer working for the Santa Fe railroad.[8][9] Although neither the founder nor the original settlers were German, many of the main streets were given German names, in order to appeal to German immigrant buyers.[10]

In 1878, Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway and parties from Marion County and McPherson County chartered the Marion and McPherson Railway Company.[11] In 1879, a branch line was built from Florence to McPherson, in 1880 it was extended to Lyons, in 1881 it was extended to Ellinwood.[12] The line was leased and operated by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. The line from Florence to Marion, was abandoned in 1968.[13] In 1992, the line from Marion to McPherson was sold to Central Kansas Railway. In 1993, after heavy flood damage, the line from Marion to McPherson was abandoned. The original branch line connected Florence, Marion, Canada, Hillsboro, Lehigh, Canton, Galva, McPherson, Conway, Windom, Little River, Mitchell, Lyons, Chase, Ellinwood.
