Ultrasound Technician Job Summary

Goff KS ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Goff KS hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job duties of an ultrasound technician may include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for further testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Goff KS ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor with Goff KS clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Kansas or whatever state you elect to work in.

Online Sonographer Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Goff KSAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Goff KS hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the rest of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Goff home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online schools are often less costly than on-campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting can be lessened as well. But just as with every sonographer college you are looking at, confirm that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal choice for you.

You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Goff KS area. Clearly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are other things that you must also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you need ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed examination of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Goff KS health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the sonogram technician colleges you are reviewing have associations with Goff KS clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional connections in the Goff healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without help. Ask if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Kansas healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they select will need to be within driving distance of their Goff KS home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Goff KS area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
