Sonographer Work Description

Brooks KY ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Brooks KY hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work functions of a sonogram tech may involve:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Brooks KY ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many schools set up through Brooks KY hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Kentucky or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonographer Programs

student attending online sonography class in Brooks KYAs previously mentioned, virtually all sonogram technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Brooks KY hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the rest of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Brooks home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently more affordable than traditional alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But just as with any ultrasound tech school you are looking at, check that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Brooks KY ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Brooks KY area. Certainly location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other variables that you must also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you need ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed review of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Brooks KY employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have relationships with Brooks KY hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Brooks healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Kentucky healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Brooks KY residence. Those who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  school you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Brooks KY area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
