Ultrasound Tech Job Description

Madisonville KY ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Madisonville KY hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job tasks of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Available

Madisonville KY ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous schools organize through Madisonville KY clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Kentucky or whatever state you elect to work in.

Online Sonographer Classes

student attending online sonography class in Madisonville KYAs aforementioned, almost all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Madisonville KY outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the balance of the training and classes can be attended online in your Madisonville home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online schools are many times less costly than on campus options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But similarly as with any sonographer school you are considering, check that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Madisonville KY ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Madisonville KY area. Obviously location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional variables that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? Most sonogram tech colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Madisonville KY employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the sonogram technician programs you are evaluating have relationships with Madisonville KY hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Madisonville medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Kentucky healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Madisonville KY home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  program you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Madisonville KY area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.

    Madisonville, Kentucky

Madisonville is a home rule-class city[5] in and the county seat of Hopkins County, Kentucky, United States,[6] located along Interstate 69 in the state's Western Coal Fields region. The population was 19,591 at the 2010 census.[7] Madisonville is a commercial center of the region and is home to Madisonville Community College.

Hopkins County and Madisonville were divided by the Civil War. Union supporters joined a regiment recruited locally by James Shackleford; Al Fowler recruited Confederate troops. The courthouse in Madisonville was burned by Confederates led by Gen. Hylan B. Lyon on December 17, 1864, as they passed through western Kentucky. While Kentucky remained a Union state, the policies imposed by Union armies in the area caused resentment and sparked sympathy for the Confederate cause.

Farming was the major occupation in Hopkins County for most of the 1800s, with tobacco the leading crop. Around 1837 an outcropping of coal was discovered, and the first coal mine in the county opened in 1869. Mining did not become a major industry until the Louisville & Nashville Railroad pushed its line southward from Henderson through Madisonville and toward Nashville in 1870. By the early 1900s, Madisonville was a rail hub, coal mining center, and had a large tobacco market. This continued until the 1960s when manufacturing and service industries came to the area.
