Sonographer Job Description

Owingsville KY ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Owingsville KY clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work duties of an ultrasound tech can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for further testing

Sonographers must regularly evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Owingsville KY ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor through Owingsville KY hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Kentucky or whatever state you choose to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Schools

student attending online sonography class in Owingsville KYAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Owingsville KY outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the remainder of the classes and training can be attended online in your Owingsville home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online programs are many times less costly than traditional alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But similarly as with any sonography college you are looking at, verify that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Owingsville KY ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Owingsville KY area. Obviously location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional variables that you should also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Owingsville KY health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound technician programs you are assessing have relationships with Owingsville KY clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist graduates and students form professional relationships in the Owingsville medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the sonographer programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Kentucky healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their Owingsville KY residence. Those who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  college you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Owingsville KY area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.

    Owingsville, Kentucky

Owingsville is a home rule-class city[4] in Bath County, Kentucky, in the United States. The population was 1,530 during the year 2010 U.S. Census.[5] It is the county seat[6] and is located roughly at the county's center, at the junction of US 60 and Kentucky 36. It is part of the Mount Sterling micropolitan area.

In 1795, Colonel Thomas Dye Owings was sent from Maryland to Kentucky by his father to operate some of the first iron furnaces in the region. Within fifteen years, Owings had amassed a good deal of wealth and land. Along with Colonel Richard H. Menefee, Owings would found the community that took his name, Owingsville.

Owings and Menefee each owned significant parcels of land in what would become Owingsville. To select whose name the community would take, the two men wagered that the man who built the finer home the quickest would be the namesake of the town. For the sum of $60,000, Owings won the contest. Owingsville was then founded in 1811.
