Trenton KY sonographer performing ultrasoundOnce you have decided to pursue an ultrasound technician degree near Trenton KY, it’s time to start the process of choosing a college. First, you have to find the ideal program that will provide the proper training to become a qualified professional. And given that some states do mandate that ultrasound techs be either licensed or certified, depending on where you will practice you may also need to be prepared to pass a certification or licensing exam. So it’s very important that you investigate each program so that you can evaluate and compare your options. But exactly where does one begin? Most individuals will begin by looking for colleges that are within commuting distance of their residences and then by comparing tuition. Certainly location and cost need to be considered when making a decision, but there are other significant factors as well. For example, if the ultrasound technician schools have earned accreditation or if they sponsor internships. These and additional qualifiers will be discussed more in detail later in this article. Sonographer Job Description

Trenton KY ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Trenton KY hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job functions of a sonogram technician may include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Trenton KY ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to complete. Another option for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor with Trenton KY clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Kentucky or whichever state you elect to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Trenton KYAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus facility. Practical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Trenton KY hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the rest of the classes and training can be attended online in your Trenton home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are many times more affordable than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But similarly as with any sonography school you are reviewing, confirm that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Trenton KY ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Trenton KY area. Certainly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional things that you must also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Trenton KY employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram tech programs you are assessing have relationships with Trenton KY clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Trenton healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Kentucky healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they pick will have to be within commuting distance of their Trenton KY home. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Trenton KY area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family obligations.

List of Kentucky supplemental roads and rural secondary highways (400–499)

Kentucky supplemental roads and rural secondary highways are the lesser two of the four functional classes of highways constructed and maintained by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, the state-level agency that constructs and maintains highways in Kentucky. The agency splits its inventory of state highway mileage into four categories:[1]

The same-numbered highway can comprise sections of road under different categories. This list contains descriptions of Supplemental Roads and highways in the Rural Secondary System numbered 400 to 499 that do not have portions within the State Primary and State Secondary systems.

Kentucky Route 400 is a 1.377-mile-long (2.216 km) supplemental road in the city of Oak Grove in southern Christian County. The highway begins at US 41 Alt. (Fort Campbell Boulevard) at the eastern edge of Fort Campbell just north of the Tennessee state line. KY 400 heads east along State Line Road, which runs immediately north of the state line. The highway turns north away from the state line and veers east again to its terminus at KY 115 (Pembroke–Oak Grove Road).[1][2] The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet established KY 400 through a March 30, 1987, official order. The route was added as a rural secondary highway; however, the highway was reclassified as a supplemental road at an unknown date, returned to the rural secondary system through an October 26, 2004, official order, and returned to the supplemental road system after a December 9, 2010, official order.[4]
