Sonogram Tech Work Summary

Verona KY ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Verona KY hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work functions of a sonogram technician may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Verona KY ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges organize with Verona KY hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Kentucky or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Online Sonographer Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Verona KYAs previously mentioned, virtually all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at an approved off-campus facility. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Verona KY outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the balance of the classes and training may be attended online in your Verona home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are many times more affordable than traditional alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials can be reduced also. But just as with every sonographer college you are looking at, confirm that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Verona KY ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Verona KY area. Naturally location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other things that you must also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? Most sonogram tech colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Verona KY employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the sonogram technician colleges you are reviewing have partnerships with Verona KY hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may assist graduates and students form professional connections in the Verona medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Kentucky healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will need to be within driving distance of their Verona KY residence. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  program you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Verona KY area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.

List of Kentucky supplemental roads and rural secondary highways (400–499)

Kentucky supplemental roads and rural secondary highways are the lesser two of the four functional classes of highways constructed and maintained by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, the state-level agency that constructs and maintains highways in Kentucky. The agency splits its inventory of state highway mileage into four categories:[1]

The same-numbered highway can comprise sections of road under different categories. This list contains descriptions of Supplemental Roads and highways in the Rural Secondary System numbered 400 to 499 that do not have portions within the State Primary and State Secondary systems.

Kentucky Route 400 is a 1.377-mile-long (2.216 km) supplemental road in the city of Oak Grove in southern Christian County. The highway begins at US 41 Alt. (Fort Campbell Boulevard) at the eastern edge of Fort Campbell just north of the Tennessee state line. KY 400 heads east along State Line Road, which runs immediately north of the state line. The highway turns north away from the state line and veers east again to its terminus at KY 115 (Pembroke–Oak Grove Road).[1][2] The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet established KY 400 through a March 30, 1987, official order. The route was added as a rural secondary highway; however, the highway was reclassified as a supplemental road at an unknown date, returned to the rural secondary system through an October 26, 2004, official order, and returned to the supplemental road system after a December 9, 2010, official order.[4]
