Sonographer Occupation Description

Wayland KY ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Wayland KY clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job tasks of an ultrasound tech may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Wayland KY ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to complete. Another option for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many colleges organize through Wayland KY clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Kentucky or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonographer Classes

student attending online sonography class in Wayland KYAs aforementioned, almost all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Wayland KY hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the balance of the training and classes can be attended online in your Wayland home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are frequently less costly than traditional alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But similarly as with every sonographer program you are looking at, verify that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Wayland KY ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Wayland KY area. Clearly location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other variables that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are several questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous review of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Wayland KY health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the ultrasound tech colleges you are interested in have partnerships with Wayland KY hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Wayland medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Kentucky healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they pick will need to be within commuting distance of their Wayland KY home. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  school you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Wayland KY area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
