Ultrasound Tech Job Summary

Hall Summit LA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Hall Summit LA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work duties of an ultrasound tech may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Hall Summit LA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to complete. Another option for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many schools sponsor through Hall Summit LA clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Louisiana or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Hall Summit LAAs aforementioned, virtually all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off campus facility. Practical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Hall Summit LA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the remainder of the classes and training can be attended online in your Hall Summit home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are often more affordable than traditional alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But just as with every sonography college you are considering, make sure that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the right option for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

Questions to ask Hall Summit LA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Hall Summit LA area. Of course location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are other factors that you should also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive examination of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Hall Summit LA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the sonogram tech colleges you are assessing have partnerships with Hall Summit LA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to get practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Hall Summit healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Louisiana healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they choose will have to be within driving distance of their Hall Summit LA residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  program you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Hall Summit LA area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
