Ultrasound Tech Job Description

Jefferson LA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Jefferson LA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job duties of an ultrasound tech can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Jefferson LA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to complete. Another alternative for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many colleges organize through Jefferson LA clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Louisiana or whichever state you decide to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Jefferson LAAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Jefferson LA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the balance of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Jefferson home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are many times less expensive than on campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be decreased also. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech program you are looking at, confirm that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the right option for you.

What to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Jefferson LA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Jefferson LA area. Certainly location will be important if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other factors that you must also take into consideration, such as if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Jefferson LA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the sonogram technician schools you are reviewing have partnerships with Jefferson LA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to obtain hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Jefferson health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Louisiana healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will have to be within commuting distance of their Jefferson LA home. Students who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Jefferson LA area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.

    Jefferson, Louisiana

Jefferson is a census-designated place (CDP) in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States, on the north side (referred to as the "East Bank") of the Mississippi River. Jefferson is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Kenner Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 11,193 at the 2010 census.[1] It is often known by locals as "Old Jefferson" (to distinguish itself from the rest of Jefferson Parish), but should not be confused with Old Jefferson in East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana.

Early French colonial documents show what would become Jefferson as part of the "Tchoupitoulas Coast" of Native American settlement. In the French and Spanish colonial era it was divided into a series of plantations with boundary lines perpendicular to the Mississippi River.

In the American Civil War, Camp Parapet was built originally by Confederate forces to defend New Orleans from an attack from the upriver side. After the Union liberated the city sailing up from downriver, U.S. troops expanded the fortifications to defend from Confederate counterattacks which never came.
