Pride ME ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Pride ME hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work functions of a sonogram tech may involve:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Pride ME ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges organize through Pride ME hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Maine or whatever state you decide to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Classes

student attending online sonography class in Pride MEAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Pride ME outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the remainder of the classes and training can be attended online in your Pride home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are often more affordable than on-campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials can be lessened as well. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech school you are looking at, verify that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Pride ME ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Pride ME area. Obviously location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are several questions that you need ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed review of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Pride ME health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the sonogram tech colleges you are interested in have relationships with Pride ME hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to receive practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Pride health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the sonographer programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Maine healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their Pride ME home. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  school you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Pride ME area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.

    Charley Pride

Charley Frank Pride (born March 18, 1934[1]) is an American country music singer, musician, guitarist, recording artist, performer, business owner, and former baseball player. His greatest musical success came in the early to mid-1970s, when he became the best-selling performer for RCA Records since Elvis Presley.[2] During the peak years of his recording career (1966–87), he garnered 52 top-10 hits on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, 40 of which made it to number one. He has appeared with country music star Brad Paisley and was featured in the 2016 CMA Awards.

Pride is one of the few African Americans to have enjoyed considerable success in the country music industry and one of only three (along with DeFord Bailey and Darius Rucker) to have been inducted as a member of the Grand Ole Opry. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2000.

Pride was born in Sledge, Mississippi, one of 11 children of poor sharecroppers. His father intended to name him Charl Frank Pride, but owing to a clerical error on his birth certificate, his legal name is Charley Frank Pride.[4] Eight boys and three girls were in the family.[5] He married Rozene Cohran in 1956.[6]
