No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. The majority work in Topsham ME clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work duties of an ultrasound tech may include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

An Associate Degree will typically involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to complete. Another option for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many colleges set up with Topsham ME hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Maine or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonographer Colleges

So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Topsham ME outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the remainder of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Topsham home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online schools are frequently less expensive than traditional options. Costs for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But similarly as with every sonography school you are considering, verify that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonography Colleges

You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Topsham ME area. Certainly location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are other variables that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are some questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Topsham ME employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the ultrasound technician programs you are evaluating have associations with Topsham ME clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may assist graduates and students form professional connections in the Topsham health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Maine healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Topsham ME residence. Students who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  college you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Topsham ME area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.

    Topsham, Maine

Topsham is a town in Sagadahoc County, Maine, United States. The population was 8,784 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland–South Portland–Biddeford, Maine metropolitan statistical area. The town is home to the annual Topsham Fair.

Called Sawacook, the area was territory of the Pejepscot Abenaki Indians, a subtribe of the Anasagunticooks (now Androscoggins), who controlled the Androscoggin River. They lived and fished at Pejepscot Falls. But a plague, probably smallpox brought by Europeans, decimated the tribe's population in 1615–1616. On June 16, 1632, the area was granted by the Plymouth Council to Thomas Purchase and George Way, later acquired by Richard Wharton and then, in 1714, by the Pejepscot Company.[4]

The first sawmill was built in 1716 on the Cathance River and, in 1717, the plantation received the name Topsham, named for Topsham in Devon, England. On January 31, 1764, it was incorporated as a town by the Massachusetts General Court.[5]Shipbuilding and lumber mills were important early businesses, the latter especially active between 1750–1770. There was a gristmill and brickyard. Pejepscot Falls provided water power to operate mills, and industries included a door, window sash and stairway factory, shingle mill, watch factory, pottery maker, nail factory, pitchfork factory, two tanneries, tobacco manufacturer, two feldspar quarries and a marble works. In 1856, the Sagadahoc Agricultural & Horticultural Society erected its building and fairgrounds, and the town remains host to the annual Topsham Fair.[6]
