Ultrasound Technician Occupation Summary

West Enfield ME ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in West Enfield ME clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job functions of an ultrasound tech can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for further testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

An Associate Degree will generally involve around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to complete. Another option for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of sonographer colleges do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges sponsor with West Enfield ME clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Maine or whatever state you decide to practice in.

student attending online sonography class in West Enfield MEAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local West Enfield ME hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your West Enfield home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently less costly than traditional options. Costs for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But just as with any sonography program you are reviewing, verify that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

Obviously location will be important if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are other factors that you should also take into consideration, such as if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound tech colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed review of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of West Enfield ME employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are evaluating have associations with West Enfield ME hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to get practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist graduates and students form professional relationships in the West Enfield healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Maine healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they select will have to be within driving distance of their West Enfield ME home. Those who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  school you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the West Enfield ME area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry.
