Sonographer Job Description

Brunswick MD ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Brunswick MD clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work duties of a sonogram tech can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must regularly evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Brunswick MD ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that most sonographer colleges do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many colleges organize through Brunswick MD clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Maryland or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Brunswick MDAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus facility. Practical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Brunswick MD outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the remainder of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Brunswick home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are often less expensive than traditional options. Costs for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech college you are considering, confirm that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Brunswick MD ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Brunswick MD area. Obviously location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are other things that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Brunswick MD health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram technician programs you are interested in have partnerships with Brunswick MD clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Brunswick health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Maryland healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Brunswick MD residence. Students who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Brunswick MD area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.

    Brunswick, Maryland

Brunswick is a city in southwestern Frederick County, Maryland, United States. The city is located on the north bank of the Potomac River; Loudoun County, Virginia occupies the opposite shore. The population was 5,870 at the 2010 census. Brunswick is home to three schools, Brunswick Elementary School, Brunswick Middle School, And Brunswick High School.

The area now known as Brunswick was originally home to the Susquehanna Indians. In 1728 the first settlement was built, and the region became known as Eel Town, because the natives would fish for eel in the Potomac River. A grant to the land was then given to John Hawkins by George II of Great Britain on August 10, 1753. The grant had the name "Hawkins Merry-Peep-o-Day".[4]

The land was sold and Leonard Smith platted it in 1787 with the name of “Berlin,” as many Germans settled in the area. The name “Berlin,” however, could not be used for mail as there was already a Berlin on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, so the post office changed the name to "Barry." The town continued to grow and was incorporated April 18, 1890 with the name “Brunswick.”[citation needed]
