Of course location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you need ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound tech schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Crownsville MD employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the sonogram technician colleges you are reviewing have associations with Crownsville MD hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Crownsville medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Maryland healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Crownsville MD home. Students who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  program you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Crownsville MD area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
