Sonographer Occupation Summary

Funkstown MD ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Funkstown MD clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job duties of a sonogram tech can include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Funkstown MD ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that almost all sonographer schools do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor through Funkstown MD clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Maryland or whatever state you elect to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Funkstown MDAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Funkstown MD outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the rest of the classes and training can be attended online in your Funkstown home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online schools are often less costly than traditional alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But similarly as with any sonography college you are looking at, make sure that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Funkstown MD ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Funkstown MD area. Naturally location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are other things that you should also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? Most ultrasound tech colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive review of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Funkstown MD employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound technician programs you are reviewing have partnerships with Funkstown MD hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to get hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Funkstown medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Maryland healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Funkstown MD home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  college you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Funkstown MD area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.

    Funkstown, Maryland

Funkstown is a town in Washington County, Maryland, United States. The population was 904 at the 2010 census. Funkstown is the hometown of songwriter Josh Morningstar, the writer of the Cody Jinks #1 song “Must Be The Whiskey.” Morningstar grew up in a home owned by his grandfather on E. Poplar St.

The Civil War Battle of Funkstown took place July 10, 1863, during the Gettysburg Campaign as Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia retreated toward Virginia in the week following the Battle of Gettysburg. Union forces of the Army of the Potomac attacked the rear guard of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia during its retreat from Pennsylvania following the Battle of Gettysburg.

A strong Confederate presence at Funkstown threatened any Union advance against Gen. Robert E. Lee’s position near Williamsport and the Potomac River as he retreated to Virginia after the Battle of Gettysburg. Maj. Gen. J.E.B. Stuart’s cavalry, posted at Funkstown, posed a serious risk to the Federal right and rear if the Union army lunged west from Boonsboro. Stuart, meanwhile, determined to wage a spirited defense to ensure Lee time to complete fortifications protecting his army and his avenue of retreat.
