Sonographer Occupation Description

La Plata MD ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in La Plata MD clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work functions of a sonogram technician can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

La Plata MD ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finish. Another option for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer programs do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many colleges set up through La Plata MD clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Maryland or whichever state you elect to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Degrees

student attending online sonography class in La Plata MDAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local La Plata MD hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the balance of the training and classes can be accessed online in your La Plata home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online schools are many times more affordable than on campus alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But just as with every sonographer program you are reviewing, verify that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the right option for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask La Plata MD ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the La Plata MD area. Clearly location will be significant if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are other variables that you should also take into consideration, such as if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? Most sonogram tech schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of La Plata MD health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the sonogram technician colleges you are evaluating have partnerships with La Plata MD clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist students and graduates establish professional connections in the La Plata health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Maryland healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will need to be within driving distance of their La Plata MD home. Students who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the La Plata MD area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.

    La Plata, Maryland

According to an unconfirmed local story, the town was named by one Colonel Samuel Chapman, whose family owned 6,000 acres (24 km2) of land in Charles County. The Colonel traveled to South America with his son George, who had contracted tuberculosis, in search of a cure. In his travels, the Colonel had apparently encountered the Río de la Plata, which flows through Argentina and Uruguay, thus naming a portion of his property "La Plata."[8]

The La Plata courthouse had been built soon after the 1819 Port Tobacco courthouse caught fire in 1895 under suspicious circumstances.[10] In 1904, the historic Christ Episcopal Church in Port Tobacco, which dates to 1683 and was reconstructed in 1884, was dismantled and its stones were then transported by oxen and cart to its current lot in La Plata.[11]

In 1940, the opening of the then Potomac River Bridge (later, the Governor Harry W. Nice Memorial Bridge), which carries U.S. Route 301 over the Potomac River, provided a link to King George, Virginia and brought long-distance east coast traffic through the town as an alternative to U.S. 1 and, later, Interstate 95.
