Sonogram Tech Occupation Description

Parkville MD ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Parkville MD clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job tasks of an ultrasound technician can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for further testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Parkville MD ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish. Another option for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that almost all sonographer programs do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many schools set up through Parkville MD hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Maryland or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Parkville MDAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus facility. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Parkville MD hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the balance of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Parkville home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are frequently less expensive than on-campus options. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But just as with any ultrasound tech school you are considering, make sure that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

Questions to ask Parkville MD ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Parkville MD area. Obviously location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are other factors that you must also take into consideration, such as if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous review of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Parkville MD employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram technician colleges you are reviewing have relationships with Parkville MD clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may assist students and graduates form professional relationships in the Parkville healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Maryland healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they choose will have to be within driving distance of their Parkville MD home. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  school you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Parkville MD area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
