Sonographer Work Description

Riva MD ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Riva MD clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work functions of a sonogram tech can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Riva MD ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that most sonographer colleges do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor through Riva MD hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Maryland or whatever state you elect to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Riva MDAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Riva MD outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the rest of the classes and training may be attended online in your Riva home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online schools are frequently more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech college you are looking at, verify that the online program you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

Questions to ask Riva MD ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Riva MD area. Certainly location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are other factors that you must also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you need ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous review of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Riva MD health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are evaluating have relationships with Riva MD hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional connections in the Riva healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the sonographer schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Maryland healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they pick will need to be within driving distance of their Riva MD home. Those who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  school you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Riva MD area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
