Ultrasound Technician Job Summary

Sudlersville MD ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Sudlersville MD clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work functions of a sonogram technician may include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Sudlersville MD ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finish. Another option for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many schools sponsor with Sudlersville MD clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Maryland or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Sudlersville MDAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus facility. Clinical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Sudlersville MD hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the rest of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Sudlersville home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently less costly than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But just as with any sonographer school you are looking at, check that the online program you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Sudlersville MD ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Sudlersville MD area. Of course location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional variables that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed review of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Sudlersville MD health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the sonogram tech programs you are interested in have partnerships with Sudlersville MD clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Sudlersville healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Maryland healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will have to be within driving distance of their Sudlersville MD residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Sudlersville MD area, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
