Onset MA sonographer performing ultrasoundOnce you have made a decision to pursue an ultrasound technician degree near Onset MA, it’s time to begin the process of picking a school. To begin with, you must find the ideal program that will provide the appropriate instruction to become a qualified professional. And because a number of states do require that sonographers be either certified or licensed, depending on your residence you may also need to be prepared to pass a licensing or certification examination. So it’s very important that you research each college so that you can evaluate and compare your options. But exactly where does one start? Many potential students will start by looking for schools that are within commuting distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Certainly location and cost should be taken into account when arriving at a decision, but there are other significant factors also. Such as, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they sponsor internships. These and additional qualifiers will be covered more in depth later in this article. But first, let’s review what an ultrasound tech does and the degrees and online education options that are offered.

Sonographer Work Summary

Onset MA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Onset MA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work tasks of an ultrasound tech can include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Available

Onset MA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finish. Another option for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous schools set up with Onset MA clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Massachusetts or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Onset MAAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Onset MA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the remainder of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Onset home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are many times more affordable than traditional options. Costs for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But similarly as with every sonographer college you are considering, verify that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Onset MA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Onset MA area. Clearly location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are other factors that you should also take into consideration, such as if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Onset MA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound technician programs you are reviewing have partnerships with Onset MA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Onset healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Massachusetts healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Onset MA home. Students who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Onset MA area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
