Most work in Rockland MA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work tasks of a sonogram tech can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for further testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Rockland MA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer colleges do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges organize with Rockland MA clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Massachusetts or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Rockland MAAs aforementioned, nearly all ultrasound tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus facility. Practical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Rockland MA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the rest of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Rockland home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are many times less costly than traditional options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But similarly as with any sonographer school you are reviewing, verify that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Rockland MA area. Obviously location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you need ask each sonographer school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Rockland MA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the sonogram technician colleges you are reviewing have relationships with Rockland MA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional connections in the Rockland health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Massachusetts healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Rockland MA home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Rockland MA area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 10.1 square miles (26 km2), of which 10.0 square miles (26 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.26 km2), or 0.79%, is water. Rockland is 8 miles (13 km) northeast of Brockton and 22 miles (35 km) south of Boston.[citation needed]
