Sonographer Work Summary

Southampton MA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Southampton MA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job tasks of an ultrasound tech may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

An Associate Degree will typically involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges organize with Southampton MA clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Massachusetts or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Online Sonographer Classes

So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Southampton MA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the rest of the classes and training may be attended online in your Southampton home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are many times less expensive than on campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials can be lessened as well. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech school you are looking at, confirm that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal option for you.

You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Southampton MA area. Obviously location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are other variables that you must also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed review of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Southampton MA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have partnerships with Southampton MA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Southampton medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Massachusetts healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they pick will need to be within commuting distance of their Southampton MA residence. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Southampton MA area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
