Three Rivers MA sonographer performing ultrasoundNow that you have decided to pursue an ultrasound technician degree near Three Rivers MA, the next step is to begin the procedure of selecting a college. First, you have to find the right program that will furnish the proper training to become a skilled professional. And since some states do mandate that sonographers be either licensed or certified, depending on where you will practice you may also need to be prepared to pass a licensing or certification exam. So it’s extremely important that you investigate each program in order to evaluate and compare your alternatives. But just where does one begin? Many potential students will begin by searching for colleges that are within driving distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Naturally cost and location need to be taken into account when arriving at a decision, but there are other critical factors also. For instance, if the ultrasound technician schools have earned accreditation or if they provide internships. These and additional qualifiers will be addressed more in depth later in this article. But first, let’s go over what a sonogram tech does and the credentials and online training programs that are available.

Sonogram Tech Job Description

Three Rivers MA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Three Rivers MA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work duties of an ultrasound technician may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Three Rivers MA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to complete. Another option for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous schools sponsor with Three Rivers MA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Massachusetts or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Three Rivers MAAs previously mentioned, nearly all ultrasound technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off campus facility. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Three Rivers MA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the remainder of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Three Rivers home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are many times less costly than on campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting can be reduced as well. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech school you are considering, make sure that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Three Rivers MA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Three Rivers MA area. Clearly location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram tech schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Three Rivers MA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the ultrasound technician colleges you are assessing have relationships with Three Rivers MA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Three Rivers medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Massachusetts healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will have to be within driving distance of their Three Rivers MA residence. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Three Rivers MA area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
