Ultrasound Technician Job Summary

Benzonia MI ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Benzonia MI clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work duties of a sonogram tech may include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for further testing

Sonographers must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

An Associate Degree will typically take around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges organize through Benzonia MI clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Michigan or whatever state you elect to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Classes

student attending online sonography class in Benzonia MIAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an approved off-campus facility. Practical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Benzonia MI hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the rest of the training and classes may be attended online in your Benzonia home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online schools are often less costly than on campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials can be decreased as well. But similarly as with every sonography school you are looking at, make sure that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Benzonia MI ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Benzonia MI area. Obviously location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are additional variables that you should also take into account, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Benzonia MI health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the sonogram technician colleges you are evaluating have partnerships with Benzonia MI clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist students and graduates form professional connections in the Benzonia medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Michigan healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Benzonia MI residence. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  school you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Benzonia MI area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.

Benzonia began in 1858 as an educational Christian colony on the model of Oberlin, Ohio. Its founding was under the leadership of Charles E. Bailey. The village, which was once the county seat, was incorporated in 1891.[7]

In 1863 Grand Traverse College was chartered and began here. It was renamed Benzonia College in 1891. In 1900 the college was changed to a preparatory school named Benzonia Academy.[8] The academy continued to function until 1918 when it was closed.[9] In his book Waiting for the Morning Train, historian Bruce Catton captured local history and documented his perspective of growing up in Benzonia as his father was an instructor at the academy.
