Sonographer Job Description

Cass City MI ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Cass City MI hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job functions of a sonogram tech can include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Cass City MI ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer colleges do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many schools organize through Cass City MI hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Michigan or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Cass City MIAs previously mentioned, virtually all sonogram tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an approved off campus facility. Practical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Cass City MI hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the rest of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Cass City home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online schools are frequently less costly than on campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be decreased as well. But just as with any sonographer program you are considering, verify that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the right option for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Cass City MI ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Cass City MI area. Clearly location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram technician schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Cass City MI health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram tech colleges you are reviewing have associations with Cass City MI clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Cass City healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Michigan healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Cass City MI residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Cass City MI area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
