Ultrasound Tech Occupation Description

Frederic MI ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Frederic MI clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work tasks of an ultrasound tech can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for further testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Frederic MI ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many colleges organize through Frederic MI clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Michigan or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Frederic MIAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram technician schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Frederic MI hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the remainder of the training and classes may be attended online in your Frederic home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are often more affordable than on-campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials may be decreased also. But just as with every sonography program you are looking at, make sure that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Frederic MI ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Frederic MI area. Certainly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional variables that you should also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Frederic MI health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the sonogram technician programs you are evaluating have relationships with Frederic MI hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Frederic healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Michigan healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they pick will have to be within commuting distance of their Frederic MI residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  school you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Frederic MI area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
