Imlay City MI sonographer performing ultrasoundSince you have made a decision to pursue an ultrasound technician degree near Imlay City MI, the next step is to start the procedure of picking a school. First, you need to find the right program that will furnish the necessary training to become a skilled professional. And since a number of states do mandate that sonographers be either certified or licensed, depending on where you will practice you may also need preparation to pass a certification or licensing examination. So it’s very important that you investigate each school in order to assess and compare your alternatives. But just where does one begin? A number of prospective students will start by looking for colleges that are within driving distance of their residences and then by comparing tuition. Of course cost and location must be considered when making a decision, but there are additional critical factors as well. For example, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they provide internship programs. These and other qualifiers will be addressed more in detail later in this article. But first, let’s discuss what a sonogram tech does and the degrees and online education options that are offered.

Ultrasound Technician Work Description

Imlay City MI ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Imlay City MI hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work duties of an ultrasound tech can involve:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Imlay City MI ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many colleges set up through Imlay City MI hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Michigan or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Imlay City MIAs aforementioned, almost all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Imlay City MI hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the rest of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Imlay City home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are often less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But similarly as with any sonographer school you are considering, check that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Imlay City MI ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Imlay City MI area. Obviously location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional variables that you should also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive examination of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Imlay City MI health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram technician schools you are reviewing have associations with Imlay City MI clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Imlay City medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Michigan healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Imlay City MI residence. Students who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Imlay City MI area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.

Along with meeting academic standards, you must be in at least fairly good physical condition, capable of standing for prolonged time frames and able to regularly lift weights of 50 pounds or more, as is it frequently necessary to position patients and move heavy machines. Additional desirable skills include technical aptitude, the ability to keep collected when faced with an angry or anxious patient and the ability to communicate in a clear and compassionate manner. Imlay City, Michigan

Imlay City was founded on April 1, 1850 by Charles Palmer, the chief engineer of the Port Huron and Lake Michigan Railroad, who bought 240 acres of land along the railroad's route at a location Palmer anticipated would be a likely produce center between the towns of Capac and Lapeer.[6] Palmer named the city for the Connecticut-based capitalist William H. Imlay, who had invested heavily in the region after moving there in 1828.[6] Within a year and a half, the newly established city had attracted 500 residents with over 120 buildings including two hotels, 20 stores, a sawmill, and a school.[7]

In 1914, the town started building streetcar lines—a form of public transportation that was usually reserved for large cities. In April 1970, Imlay City celebrated its 100th birthday, and the residents voted to changed Imlay City from a village to a home rule city by a two to one margin.[6] The construction of Interstate 69 in the 1980s connected Imlay City with Flint, Port Huron, and Canada, leading to significant economic growth to serve the interstate travelers.

Imlay City has five public schools, which are all part of Imlay City Community Schools, and one private school. The public schools include Weston Elementary for Kindergarten through 2nd grade, Borland Elementary for 3rd through 5th grade, Imlay City Middle School for 6th grade through 8th grade, and Imlay City High School for 9th through 12th grade. There is also Venture High School, an alternative school for students who do not succeed at the traditional high school. The private school in Imlay City is the Imlay City Christian School, which is a non-denominational, private Christian school located just outside town; it was established in 1952 by parents of the local area.
