Sonographer Work Summary

Milford MI ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Milford MI clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job tasks of a sonogram tech may include:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Available

Milford MI ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete. Another option for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many schools set up through Milford MI hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Michigan or whatever state you elect to work in.

Online Sonographer Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Milford MIAs aforementioned, nearly all sonogram technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Milford MI outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the rest of the training and classes may be attended online in your Milford home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are often less expensive than traditional options. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be reduced also. But similarly as with any sonography school you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Milford MI ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Milford MI area. Obviously location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are several questions that you need ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Milford MI health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram technician programs you are evaluating have partnerships with Milford MI hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional connections in the Milford healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Michigan healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they select will need to be within driving distance of their Milford MI home. Those who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Milford MI area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
