Pinckney MI ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Pinckney MI clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work duties of a sonogram technician may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Pinckney MI ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that the majority of sonographer colleges do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges organize with Pinckney MI hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Michigan or whatever state you decide to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Pinckney MIAs aforementioned, virtually all sonogram technician schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus facility. Clinical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Pinckney MI outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the balance of the training and classes may be attended online in your Pinckney home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online schools are frequently less expensive than on campus options. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But just as with every ultrasound tech school you are looking at, make sure that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Pinckney MI ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Pinckney MI area. Certainly location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are other factors that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound tech colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Pinckney MI health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the sonogram tech colleges you are evaluating have associations with Pinckney MI clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Pinckney medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Michigan healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Pinckney MI home. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  school you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Pinckney MI area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
