Sonogram Tech Occupation Summary

River Rouge MI ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in River Rouge MI hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job functions of an ultrasound tech can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

River Rouge MI ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to complete. Another option for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many colleges organize with River Rouge MI hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Michigan or whatever state you elect to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Schools

student attending online sonography class in River Rouge MIAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local River Rouge MI hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the balance of the classes and training may be accessed online in your River Rouge home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials may be reduced as well. But just as with every sonography school you are reviewing, verify that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the right option for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask River Rouge MI ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the River Rouge MI area. Certainly location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other things that you should also take into account, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound technician schools have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous River Rouge MI health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound technician schools you are evaluating have partnerships with River Rouge MI hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the River Rouge healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Michigan healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they select will have to be within travelling distance of their River Rouge MI home. Those who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the River Rouge MI area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.

    River Rouge, Michigan

River Rouge is a city in Wayne County in the U.S. state of Michigan and an industrial Downriver suburb of Detroit. The population was 7,903 at the 2010 census. It is named after the River Rouge (from the French "rouge" meaning red), which flows along the city's northern border and into the Detroit River. The city includes the heavily industrialized Zug Island at the mouth of the River Rouge.

The small settlement incorporated as a village in 1899 within Ecorse Township.[6] In 1922 as the city of Detroit expressed interest in annexing land in the township, the Village of River Rouge incorporated as a city on April 3 to avoid being annexed.[6] A month later Detroit completed annexation of land in the township immediately to the west of River Rouge.

One of the most important historical associations with River Rouge is its relationship to a Great Lakes freighter, the SS Edmund Fitzgerald, which sank in 1975 in a fierce storm in Lake Superior, with the loss of all 29 crew. The ship was constructed in 1958 at the Great Lakes Engineering Works in River Rouge and was the largest ship on the lakes at the time.
