Sonographer Work Description

Rosebush MI ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Rosebush MI hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work duties of a sonogram technician can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

Rosebush MI ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to complete. Another option for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Rosebush MI clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Michigan or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Rosebush MIAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Practical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Rosebush MI outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the balance of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Rosebush home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online programs are frequently less costly than on-campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be reduced also. But similarly as with every sonographer school you are looking at, confirm that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the right option for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Rosebush MI ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Rosebush MI area. Clearly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed review of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Rosebush MI employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram technician schools you are assessing have partnerships with Rosebush MI clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Rosebush health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Michigan healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they choose will have to be within travelling distance of their Rosebush MI home. Students who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Rosebush MI area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.

    Rosebush, Michigan

Rosebush began in 1844 when Cornelius Bogan started a general store. He called the town: "Halfway" because it was approximately halfway between Clare and Mount Pleasant. In 1868, the Ann Arbor railroad came through the area and resident James Bush, while officially platting the land, bartered with the railroad some of his property for the right to have the station named after his wife, Rose. An addition to the community was later platted in 1873 by Elias B. Calkins and named Calkinsville; this was the name of the original post office on July 9, 1873. The post office name was changed to Rosebush in 1889, back to Calkinsville in 1890 and once again Rosebush on February 19, 1903. The name has remained unchanged since.[6]
