Ultrasound Tech Work Summary

Burnsville MN ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Burnsville MN hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job tasks of an ultrasound technician may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Burnsville MN ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many schools organize with Burnsville MN hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Minnesota or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Sonographer Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Burnsville MNAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound technician colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Burnsville MN hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the balance of the training and classes may be attended online in your Burnsville home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently more affordable than traditional alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But just as with any ultrasound tech program you are considering, make sure that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Burnsville MN ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Burnsville MN area. Obviously location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional things that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? Most ultrasound technician colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous review of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Burnsville MN health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the ultrasound tech colleges you are reviewing have relationships with Burnsville MN clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Burnsville health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Minnesota healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Burnsville MN home. Students who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  program you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Burnsville MN area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
