Ultrasound Technician Work Description

South Haven MN ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in South Haven MN hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work duties of a sonogram tech may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Available

South Haven MN ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many schools organize through South Haven MN hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Minnesota or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Programs

student attending online sonography class in South Haven MNAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus facility. Practical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local South Haven MN outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the remainder of the classes and training may be accessed online in your South Haven home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently less expensive than traditional options. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be decreased as well. But just as with any sonographer school you are looking at, verify that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask South Haven MN ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the South Haven MN area. Certainly location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed examination of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of South Haven MN employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound tech schools you are interested in have relationships with South Haven MN clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the South Haven health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Minnesota healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their South Haven MN home. Those who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  program you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the South Haven MN area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
