Sonographer Job Description

Buffalo MO ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Buffalo MO clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work functions of an ultrasound technician can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Available

Buffalo MO ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require about 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous schools organize with Buffalo MO hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Missouri or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Buffalo MOAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Buffalo MO outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the rest of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Buffalo home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are often more affordable than on-campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be decreased as well. But similarly as with every sonography college you are considering, confirm that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Buffalo MO ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Buffalo MO area. Certainly location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are a few questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Buffalo MO employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram technician programs you are reviewing have associations with Buffalo MO hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Buffalo health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Missouri healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they select will need to be within driving distance of their Buffalo MO residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Buffalo MO area, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
