Sonographer Occupation Description

Hurley MO ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Hurley MO clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job functions of a sonogram technician may include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Hurley MO ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finish. Another option for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that most sonographer colleges do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges set up with Hurley MO clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Missouri or whichever state you choose to work in.

Online Sonographer Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Hurley MOAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus facility. Practical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Hurley MO outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the balance of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Hurley home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are many times more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be lessened as well. But just as with every sonographer school you are looking at, check that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Hurley MO ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Hurley MO area. Clearly location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional factors that you must also take into consideration, such as if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Hurley MO employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the sonogram technician programs you are reviewing have relationships with Hurley MO hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist students and graduates develop professional connections in the Hurley health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Missouri healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they select will need to be within driving distance of their Hurley MO home. Students who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  college you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Hurley MO area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
