Ultrasound Tech Work Summary

Garrison MT ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Garrison MT hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work duties of an ultrasound technician may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for additional testing

Sonographers must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Garrison MT ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that most sonographer programs do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor through Garrison MT clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Montana or whichever state you elect to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in Garrison MTAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off campus facility. Clinical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Garrison MT hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the balance of the training and classes may be attended online in your Garrison home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times less expensive than traditional options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech college you are looking at, confirm that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the right option for you.

Questions to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Garrison MT ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Garrison MT area. Clearly location will be important if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Garrison MT health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the sonogram technician colleges you are assessing have relationships with Garrison MT hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Garrison medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Montana healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they pick will need to be within travelling distance of their Garrison MT home. Those who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Garrison MT area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
