Ultrasound Tech Job Description

Lake Mc Donald MT ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Lake Mc Donald MT clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work duties of a sonogram technician can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Lake Mc Donald MT ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finish. Another alternative for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many schools sponsor through Lake Mc Donald MT clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Montana or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Classes

student attending online sonography class in Lake Mc Donald MTAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Lake Mc Donald MT hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the rest of the classes and training can be attended online in your Lake Mc Donald home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But just as with every sonographer school you are looking at, verify that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Lake Mc Donald MT ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Lake Mc Donald MT area. Obviously location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech schools have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed examination of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Lake Mc Donald MT health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are evaluating have relationships with Lake Mc Donald MT clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist students and graduates form professional relationships in the Lake Mc Donald healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Montana healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will have to be within travelling distance of their Lake Mc Donald MT residence. Those who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Lake Mc Donald MT area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.

    Lake McDonald Lodge

The Lake McDonald Lodge is a historic lodge located within Glacier National Park, on the southeast shore of Lake McDonald. The lodge is a 3-1/2-story structure built in 1913 based on Kirtland Cutter's design. The foundation and first floor walls are built of stone, with a wood-frame superstructure. The lobby is a large, open space that extends to the third story. It has a massive fireplace and a concrete floor scored in a flagstone pattern, with messages in several Indian languages inscribed into it. The rustic lodge was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1987 as one of the nation's finest examples of large-scale Swiss chalet architecture.[3] Lake McDonald Lodge is a member of Historic Hotels of America, the official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.[4]

The Lake McDonald Lodge, initially known as the Lewis Glacier Hotel, was the second hotel on the site. The first, the Snyder Hotel, was built by George Snyder in 1895. It was accessed by a steamboat that ran the 10 miles (16 km) from the Apgar area to the hotel, preceded by a two-mile trip on a horse-drawn carriage and a ferry trip over the Middle Fork Flathead River.[5]

The Lewis Glacier Hotel lodge was built in 1913 by John Lewis, a land speculator from Columbia Falls, Montana. He bought the land, amounting to about 285 acres (115 ha), in 1904-5[6] and had the hotel built during a period when the Great Northern Railway was building other hotels and backcountry chalets, including Many Glacier Hotel, Glacier Park Lodge, Granite Park Chalet, Sperry Chalet, and Two Medicine Store. This movement was part of a trend by railroads during that time to build destination resorts in areas of exceptional scenic value. Railroads wanted to attract tourists and create resorts that were equal to the scenery, and private operators like John Lewis had to build equally impressive facilities in order to keep up.The Lewis hotel, designed by the Spokane firm of Kirtland, Cutter and Malmbren, was a much more ambitious undertaking. The hotel was built in 1913-14, working through the winter months, and opened in June 1914.[7] The new hotel was designed to continue the Swiss cottage theme already developed by the Great Northern railway hotels. Artist Charles M. Russell was a frequent guest at the hotel in the 1920s, and is claimed to have etched pictographs in the dining room's original fireplace hearth.[5]
